Colin P. Jenkins was one of the pioneers of Doctor Who fanzines and also one of the most prolific among his peers. His publication, Vortex, dated back to 1977 and ran for 18 issues, with the last being advertised six years later in 1983.

Vortex – A History of UNIT was produced to tie in with a feature focusing on the character of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart by Skaro editor, Simon Lydiard, which appeared in the printed Issue 16 of Vortex. The cassette was a production of the fanzine’s ‘audio department’ and was advertised only within the pages of Vortex itself; it was announced in Issue 16 in January 1983 and was available to anyone ordering Issue 17 between then and August of the same year. Those wishing to receive a copy of the cassette were asked to enclose a C-120 and return postage with their order.

The programme itself was produced in a documentary style and celebrated the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, plotting their history from their introduction in The Web of Fear to their final regular appearance in the classic series in The Seeds of Doom.

 
 

 

Although Vortex came to an end with the printed Issue 18, Colin P. Jenkins went on to co-produce a combined Vortex / Skaro special with Simon Lydiard later in 1983 entitled Doctor Who – Citizen of the Universe, another printed title.
